Compositions

Composition is my main goal as a musician. Visual artists have an advantage when it comes to composition. From day one they are encouraged to create their own artwork, but many musicians aren't encouraged to write their own music. We musicians are more likely to learn other people's music rather than create new. I would like to add to the music of the world by composing original music. I consider compositional and improvisatory ability to be the most important skill among musicians.

Other than guitar, I compose music for various instruments, mostly strings, winds and horns. I play the guitar and drum parts on these recordings, and I typically record the other parts on a synthesizer in order to bring the sound to fruition. I would love to have more live recordings, so if you have an interest in playing any of my music, I would love to give you a score and parts in exchange for a recording!

If you are interested in acquiring a full score with parts for your ensemble to play, please email me at nmordalmusic@gmail.com.

The Girl From Ipanema - Antonio Carlos Jobim

I certainly did not compose this famous tune, but I did write most of the melodic material in this arrangement for Violin, Cello and Guitar. In the fall of 2018 I was commissioned by Augsburg University to arrange and compose music for the Distinguished Alumni Celebration event. We had flute, saxophone, harp and drumset graduates from the Augsburg music program that can be heard on the live recording. I have 2 options of an ensemble available: Flute, Oboe, Guitar or Violin, Cello, Guitar.

In A Still, Cold Winter Night - Mark Sedio

This is an SATB choral work by Mark Sedio. He asked me to compose an original guitar part for the piece. The music is published by ECS Publishing Group. I sang in the Central Lutheran choir as a Choral Scholar for 5 years and was able to accompany the choir on a few occasions.

Ravens

Composed for Violin, Cello and Guitar and features a solo improvisation section. Optional Flute, Clarinet, Guitar is also available. Described as sounding like "cold robots being transported on a train" by one poetically minded observer.

Squidtown Mare

Composed for a sextet of Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet and rhythm section and features a solo improvisation section. The trumpet melody cuts through and is joined by it's wind counterparts as backgrounds. The solo section is more involved than a straight chord progression, the instruments must follow a chromatic line in the middle of every solo. The sonic experience is one of an eastern scale, not strictly major or minor.

The Fauci Ouchi

Composed for a sextet of Soprano Saxophone, Trumpet, Bass Clarinet and rhythm section and features a complex solo form. The harsh sounding melody is tossed back and forth by the saxophone and trumpet. At times, all instruments are joined in a cacophonous chorus over an unsettling harmony. This chaotic unease symbolizes the disgusting nature of a vaccine mandate that was forced upon the United States by the diversity-focused Biden administration of 2021. Democrats and Republicans who endorsed this should be evicted from office for trying to force such a monstrous, soviet-styled law upon our free country. Thank God for the Daily Wire and Supreme Court who prevented the Democrat administration from successfully enacting this into law.

Chambered, No Safety

A 12-bar blues composed for guitar, trumpet, bass and drumset. The title and overall mood of the piece is inspired by Thelonius Monk's blues song Straight, No Chaser. While is is a standard 12-bar blues form, the chord progression utilizes some unusual changes and extensions for typical blues music.

Wooly Bounce

This piece is composed for 2 flutes, clarinet, bass clarinet and guitar. It is inspired by flamenco rhythm patterns that seem to come in groups of 3, though you'd never realize it because they don't follow the norms of most western-influenced music that we hear everywhere. The beat is wooly, or disguised.

Prelude to Covid

Composed for 2 flutes with guitar accompaniment. This began as a music theory assignment and turned into a nice sounding prelude. It is a round 32 measures with a few odd chord choices, it was an assignment after all. The odd chords seem to imply a looming darkness in an otherwise normal world. Perfect to symbolize the early pandemic days of spring 2020.
